All Souls Day Candlelight Vigil Mass

All Saints Day and All Souls Day are significant moments in the life of Father Kapaun.

On All Saints, he found himself deep into North Korea, like many of his soldiers, hoping the war would be over by Thanksgiving.  He travelled to the various battalions of the 8th Cavalry Regiment, celebrating 4 Masses.

Little did he know, they would be his last.

Shortly after midnight, on November 2nd, All Souls Day, the Chinese launched a deadly ambush.  The soldiers pleaded with their chaplain to escape, but he refused.  ”My place is with the wounded,” he said.

Hundreds of men lost their lives, and hundreds were captured, Father Kapaun among them.

Mass Details

In remembrance of this night, and to pray for all of our loved ones who have gone before us awaiting the resurrection of the body, the Father Kapaun Guild is hosting a candlelight vigil Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in the presence of Father Kapaun’s remains.

Mass will begin at Midnight, November 2nd (moving from Sunday night into Monday morning). We expect the Mass, plus a short meditation and time for prayer to take about 1 hour.

Parking will be to the south (rear) of the Cathedral. Enter through the covered walkway to the gathering space/parish offices. We will plan to have security in the parking lot before and after the Mass.

We would love to have you join us for this special day in the life of the Church and Father Kapaun!
